American Suzuki Motor Corp. is reportedly recalling approximately 1,900 units of 2005 Eiger 4WD 5-Speed (LT-F400FK5), as well as the 2005 Eiger 4WD Auto (LT-A400FK5) ATVs. According to an online source, the 2005 model year Eiger ATVs were assembled with an improperly manufactured plastic fuel tank, with a thin wall portion, which could run the risk of a fuel leak and presents a possible fire hazard. IDAHO GROUPS WORK ON ATV HUNTING PLANS Representatives from the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) and the Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife-Idaho (SFW-Idaho) announced plans for a 5-step initiative, which addresses the use of ATV's while hunting. The groups plan calls for an increase in cooperation between the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, according to Public Lands Director Brian Hawthorne of the BRC. SIMS' ATV REGULATIONS REJECTED AGAIN After lobbying for months to have legislation regulating ATVs in Georgia, state Rep. Chuck Sims' latest version was rejected in March, according to the Associated Press. The scaled-back version of his plan reportedly would have banned children under the age 10 from riding ATVs on public land, required unlicensed drivers to pass free safety courses and mandate that no children under 16 could drive ATVs on shoulders of roads. The plan would have also reinforced existing state laws prohibiting ATV riders from driving on public roads. OFFROAD FUNDING CUTS STALLED The Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Committee defeated state Senator John Marty's bill to redirect up to $2 million of gasoline taxes collected from ATV and four-wheel-drive-truck owners into highway accounts, according to The Grand Forks Herald. The paper explains his reasons for this are his belief that few of the recreationists use facilities paid for with those funds. However, state Senator Michael Jungbauer disagrees and he was quoted as saying, "I have two ATVs in my garage that I can't ride in my city because it's against the law. We're waiting for trails to ride on. We don't use trails because they're not available." ATVS COULD BE USED DURING DEER SEASON The Minnesota Environment and National Resources committee approved a bill allowing ATVs to run on privately owned land, with landowner's permission, during the shooting hours of the deer season, according to the Mesabi Daily News. AMENDMENT CALLS FOR YOUTHS TO WEAR HELMETS In the last days of the legislative session, Kentucky State Sen. Joey Pendleton of Hopkinsville introduced an amendment requiring all ATV riders under the age of 16 to wear helmets, according to The Paducah Sun. The state Health and Welfare Committee approved the amendment and reportedly added it to a house bill. FOREST SERVICE MEMO CLEARS UP CONFUSION After the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) raised concerns, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service released a memo in late March, clarifying the process used to designate areas accessible to motorized vehicles, according to an online source. The memo reportedly states, "the purpose of the interim orders is to prohibit wheeled vehicles from leaving existing roads and trails to stop cross-country resource damage ... (forest service) orders should not be used to close existing roads and trails." |
